A new grid-scale battery storage facility has begun operating in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, adding another project to the country's growing energy storage infrastructure.
On October 2, 2026, Japanese battery storage company PowerX announced that it had delivered four Mega Power 2700A battery energy storage systems to a facility developed by Daiwa House Industry. The facility, named DREAM Storage Battery Fukuoka Kurate, began operation on September 16, 2026.
Located on the grounds of Daiwa House Industry's Kyushu factory in Kurate, the facility is connected to the electricity grid in the Kyushu region. According to PowerX, the four storage units have a combined rated capacity of 9.8 MWh, with a power conversion system output of 1.9 MW.

A New Step in Japan's Battery Storage Deployment
The project is Daiwa House Industry's first high-voltage grid-scale battery storage facility since the company entered the battery storage business. PowerX supplied the equipment and will also handle the facility's operation through its role as the storage project aggregator.
The storage systems use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. Each unit is housed in an ISO-standard 20-foot container, a format commonly used for large-scale energy storage installations.
Grid-connected battery systems can store electricity and discharge it at a later time, helping operators manage differences between electricity supply and demand. Depending on how a facility is operated and how electricity is traded, storage can also provide flexibility when renewable generation varies throughout the day.
However, the project announcement does not specify that the facility is paired with a particular solar power plant. It is therefore more accurate to describe it as a grid-scale battery storage project rather than a solar-plus-storage installation.
Why Grid-Scale Storage Matters
As electricity systems incorporate more variable renewable generation, battery storage is becoming one of the tools used to manage changing supply and demand. Its actual contribution depends on factors such as charging and discharging schedules, grid conditions, market rules and the availability of electricity.
The Fukuoka project is a concrete example of battery storage infrastructure moving from development into operation in Japan. While a single project does not establish a wider market trend on its own, it shows how companies are beginning to deploy grid-connected storage facilities as part of their energy businesses.
