The Role of a Tabbing Machine in the PV Production Line

Within a solar panel production line, the tabbing machine comes after the cell sorting step and before the stringing process. Its key function is to precisely and efficiently attach tabbing wire (or ribbon) to individual solar cells, setting the stage for creating strings of interconnected cells. This can be a complex process that is handled by automated machinery.

Here's how the tabbing machine fits into the overall PV production flow:

Cell Arrival: Sorted solar cells are delivered to the tabbing machine via a conveyor system.

Tab Wire Preparation: The machine automatically unwinds tabbing wire from a reel and feeds it into the machine. This step often involves wire straightening, and in some cases, applying flux or paste.

Cell Positioning: The machine precisely positions the solar cell for tab attachment.

Tabbing Process: The tabbing machine performs the actual attachment of the tabbing ribbon, which is usually a solder or weld process.

String Formation: Some tabbing machines may partially or fully form short strings of interconnected cells. These "pre-strings" are then conveyed to the next stage of the production line.

Output and Transfer: Completed tabbing operations are moved to a conveyor or other handling system to be transported to the stringing station.

Wire Unwind System:

Reel and Brake: Holds the tabbing wire and provides consistent tension.

Wire Straightener: Straightens the wire to ensure precise placement.

Wire Guides: Guides the wire along the correct path.

Wire Cutting and Forming System:

Precision Cutter: Cuts the tabbing wire to the exact length needed for the cells.

Forming Tools: If needed, shapes the wire to match cell contact pads.

Flux or Solder Paste Application System:

Dispensing Nozzle: Applies a controlled amount of flux or paste to the cell or tabbing wire.

Metering System: Ensures consistent application of flux or paste.

Cell Positioning and Holding System:

Vacuum Grippers or Mechanical Clamps: Holds the cells in place during the tabbing process.

Alignment Sensors: Ensures correct cell positioning.

Bonding System (Soldering or Welding):

Soldering Head:

Hot Bar Soldering: Uses a heated bar to apply solder.

Infrared Soldering: Uses infrared energy to melt solder.

Laser Soldering: Uses a laser beam for precise soldering.

Ultrasonic Welding Head: Uses ultrasonic vibrations to bond the wire to the cell.

Conductive Adhesive Dispenser: Dispenses a conductive adhesive for bonding, and avoids high temperatures.

Control System:

Programmable Logic Controller (PLC): Controls all machine functions.

HMI (Human-Machine Interface): Allows for operator control and monitoring.
