Canadian solar manufacturer Heliene recently completed a significant $50 million transfer of tax credits for its photovoltaic (PV) module factory located in Minnesota, USA. This transaction marks a major step in the company's efforts to expand its manufacturing capacity and strengthen its presence in the U.S. solar market.
Heliene has been manufacturing photovoltaic modules in both Ontario, Canada, and Minnesota, USA, with investments in the Minnesota facility dating back to 2018. In 2023, the company announced an additional $10 million investment aimed at expanding the production line of its Minnesota plant. The recent transfer and sale of approximately $50 million in 45X production tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) will allow Heliene to reduce debt and inject capital into the completion of its new factory's production line.
Heliene's Minnesota factory produces a substantial volume of photovoltaic modules that qualify as "domestically manufactured" in the United States, making them eligible for tax credits. The IRA's provision allowing clean energy tax credits to be transferred is designed to facilitate investment in clean energy technologies, particularly for companies without extensive experience in handling tax credits or tax equity deals. This provision has enabled Heliene to leverage the 45X tax credit, which supports domestic manufacturing of clean energy components, thus advancing the company's growth strategy.
Martin Pochtaruk, CEO of Heliene, emphasized the importance of this tax credit sale, stating, "Monetizing our 45X tax credit through this transaction will bolster Heliene's domestic manufacturing capabilities. The long-term sustainability this provides will enable us to further increase domestic production capacity and consistently supply high-quality photovoltaic modules."
Beyond the development of its Minnesota factory, Heliene is also expanding its reach in the U.S. market through a joint venture with Premier Energies. Together, they are working on building a solar cell manufacturing plant in the United States, further solidifying Heliene's commitment to expanding its solar production footprint and contributing to the U.S. renewable energy sector.
