Nigeria Plans to Ban Solar Panel Imports to Boost Local Manufacturing

The Nigerian government has announced plans to suspend the import of solar panels in a bid to accelerate clean energy adoption and promote local manufacturing. The policy was unveiled by Minister of Science and Technology Uche Nnaji during the launch of the NEV T6 electric bus in Abuja.

Nnaji emphasized that Nigeria is capable of producing its own solar panels and predicted a rise in off-grid solar adoption among households and institutions. However, the move has faced criticism from the Nigerian Private Enterprise Promotion Center, which warned that domestic manufacturing is currently inadequate to meet demand. The organization urged the government to reconsider, stating the ban could worsen the energy crisis.
